I am interested in what I consider to be the essence of my subjects. I do this mainly through observation, in my way showing respect for the beauty and individuality of the subject in hand. The most effective and meaningful way for me to approach this is to work from life. However it is ultimately the formal issues of painting, like images, composition and handwriting that occupy my work
Animals play a special role in my work, in my former role as a veterinarian, and now as an artist. I am interested in societies different treatments towards them; from the large scale, mostly unseen farming to the anthropomorphism and romanticism, and how this is portrayed in art. In both of these extremes it is my view that the identity of the animal is in danger. My portrayal and respect for animals is only possible when I view them as individuals in their own right.
